Return to Home In this wiki, I would like to share some of the highlights of my career in education, and to focus on the aspects about which I am most passionate. As I have grown as an educator, I have been privileged to have the opportunity of continuous learning, and I have had some quite different, though connected, experiences. I began my teaching career as a middle and high school English teacher, during which period I became Head of the English department.
As a result of relocating, I moved to primary school teaching, where I was able to pursue my two passions of encouraging children to read, of promoting literacy in all its forms, and of seeing education as an integrated process entailing the whole child. With the introduction of information technologies in the 1990s, I was given the opportunity of discovering the excitement and potential of using information communication technologies in the classroom, and of leading the school I was working in into a networked, digital environment.
At this time, I was promoted to the position of deputy principal and was involved in curriculum development, and taking the school into an inquiry and skills based curriculum. I also had the opportunity to help direct the school’s extracurricular program, and to ensure that the school took cognizance of all areas of each child’s development. I was also instrumental in introducing and developing a life skills program, which incorporated environmental education and character development, as well as ensuring that the school offered adequate counseling facilities.
The combination of being involved with technology, information and reading led to a Masters degree in Education (Teacher Librarianship) which has given me the opportunity to focus on my passion for learning, and supporting the learning of those around me.
